How Secure Are Your Electronics?

How Secure Are Your Electronics?

In today’s modern world, everyone has at least one internet-capable device. Typically though, people have more than one device like this. They have laptops, desktops, tablets, and smartphones. All of these devices are constantly connected to the internet to ensure that their user can access whatever they need whenever they want. There are all kinds of information out there that can be accessed with the tap of a finger.

Unfortunately, if a person is not careful, that connection can work both ways. Hackers fill the internet with malicious websites and files in an ongoing effort to access other people’s private information. If someone is not careful, they can unknowingly provide a random person with access to every private bit of information stored on their device.

Keeping their device safe and secure is in everyone’s best interest. After all, a person doesn’t want to let a hacker into their bank account or provide one with enough personal information that they can steal the victim’s identity online.

Keeping Devices Safe

One of the most important steps that a person can take to keeping their device secure, is simply having anti-virus and anti-spyware software along with a firewall installed on it. Anti-virus and anti-spyware software protect devices from malicious files that could potentially end up on them. They monitor and scan files that are downloaded onto the device. They also scan the device itself to make sure that no known viruses are already installed.

Firewalls, which are named after the metal walls that would prevent fires from spreading in buildings or vehicles, monitor network traffic on a device. They contain data “fires” by preventing information from spreading without control. They see what programs are sending information and, and what information is being sent back to the device. If information is coming from an unsecured or untrustworthy site, then the firewall blocks the communication. The same happens when an unknown program within the device tries to send information out. The firewalls block this communication and alert the user. The user can then determine whether or not the communication is safe.

These kinds of things should be installed and used on all devices that connect to the internet in order to ensure that they remain safe and secure. However, simply having them installed is not enough. Hackers are always updating their schemes, meaning that the software designed to stop them needs to be constantly updated as well. A person needs to make sure that they regularly update the software that keeps their computer safe so that it can continue to effectively do its job.

Being Safe Online

Once a person is sure that their device is “locked up” safe and tight with anti-virus software and a firewall, they then need to learn how to be safe while online. By learning to avoid certain situations and scenarios, they can reduce the chances of ever needing to use the protection software.

For starters, a person should be wary of where they connect to the internet. Yes, public Wi-Fi may be nice because everyone can connect to it, but that is exactly what makes it dangerous. Anyone can connect to public Wi-Fi sources, including hackers. When devices are on the same network, they can easily share data between them. Hackers can exploit this when connected to public hotspots. This is why a person should only connect to trusted Wi-Fi networks.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is scam emails. It is never a good idea to click on a link or download a file from an email that was sent by a stranger. The link could take the person to a malicious website that could try to infect the person’s computer with a virus or trick them into handing over personal information. The file in the email could contain a virus, and by opening it, the person allows it to infect their computer. Even emails sent from “friends” can be dangerous. Often times, hackers will set up their email to display the name of someone in the recipient’s contact list, making it seem as though it came from a friend. That is why it is best to never open links in emails.

Consequences of Hacking

Computer crimes, such as hacking, in Tennessee are defined under Tennessee Penal Code 502. Computer crimes are defined as any unlawful accessing, changing, or damaging of a computer, a computer’s system, or a computer network. This includes smart devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Committing any kind of computer crime can result in severe fines and imprisonment. Fines can range anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000. The imprisonment can be served in either a county jail or state prison. The sentence can be anywhere from one year, 16 months, two years, or three years. The severity of the punishment depends on the severity of the crime committed.

Unfortunately, these consequences don’t prevent everyone from hacking into computers that aren’t theirs.

Keeping an Electronic Device Safe Is Easier than You Think

People are sometimes surprised by everything they have to do to ensure their electronic device’s safety. However, after a person has installed protective software and learned the tricks to keep their devices safe, things get easier. It will become second nature to spot malicious sites, files and emails.

By following the tips mentioned above, a person can ensure the safety of their devices. By doing so, they keep all personal files safe and out of harm’s way of most hackers. This means fewer chances of someone stealing their identity or accessing their bank account.

Tips for Preventing Christmas Tree Fires

Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without an evergreen tree standing tall and proud in the living room. This is why thousands upon thousands of people will be getting cut evergreen trees for their homes this year. While the trees look stunning, especially when fully decorated, they can pose a bit of a problem. Pine and other evergreen trees can be very flammable, especially as they dry out.

If a person wants to avoid the possibility of a fire in their own home, then they need to follow these tips.

  • Choose a fresh tree. A person should be able to touch the tree and not see a bunch of needles fall from the branch.
  • Place the tree away from any sort of heat sources that could cause the tree to ignite.
  • Replace any light strands that are broken or damaged as they can cause a spark.
  • Never place candles on or near the tree.
  • Water the tree daily to keep it hydrated.
  • Turn the lights off when leaving home or going to bed.

Once Christmas has come and gone, the tree should be removed from the room as quickly as possible. Over the course of the month, the tree will dry out and become more and more of a fire hazard. It should be removed as soon as possible and kept away from the house until it is removed completely.

Why We Love What We Do

Bail bonds don’t exist because the bail bond companies and the government want your money. Bail bonds exist because you have the right to be protected and, despite any crime you did or did not commit, the government wants to help you protect your rights. It might be a little convoluted that the government is trying to both punish you and protect you, but you have rights either way.

  • You have the right to non-excessive bail.
  • You have the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

These are two of the most important rights bail bond companies serve to protect for people who have been arrested.

Bail is expensive to pay, but having a third party bail bond company like Memphis Bail Bonds is very helpful and more affordable. Bail bond companies do not have the power to reduce the set bail amount that the judge has given. Only the judge can lower the bail amount. But what bail bond companies like Memphis Bail Bonds does is ask you to only pay 10% of the bail amount. If you don’t use a bail bond, you would need to pay 100% of it.

Memphis Bail Bonds is very friendly and understanding and will help every client who needs it. You won’t be turned away because you did this crime. Innocent until proven guilty resonates well in bail bond companies.

So, don’t think all bail bond companies are only in it for your money. Some, like Memphis Bail Bonds have been doing this their whole lives because they truly want to make someone’s day a little better.

It Is Never Okay to Drink and Drive

If you were to ask anyone if driving while drunk was a safe thing to do, they would tell you it is a very dangerous thing to do. In 2017, 29% of all driving fatalities were caused by drunk drivers. This amounted to nearly 11,000 deaths that could have easily been prevented. With all the advances in technology, getting a safe ride home has never been easier. There is never a reason to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while drunk.

Drunk driving is illegal in every single state in the US due to how dangerous it is. Getting caught while driving under the influence carries heavy penalties, especially for repeat offenders. The laws and penalties vary by state. Here in Tennessee, the state has several different laws surrounding the act of driving under the influence (DUI).

Penalties of DUI

All Tennessee laws surrounding DUI basically state that a person should never get behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated. What changes through these various laws is the exact circumstances. If a person is simply caught driving while intoxicated, they will face consequences under Vehicle Code (VC) 23152. If they cause injury to someone else, then they will face charges under VC 23153.
A person can even get into trouble for refusing to provide a breath or blood sample to an officer during a traffic stop. This can be charged under VC 23612.

The penalties for committing DUI vary depending on the crime itself and the driving record of the driver in question. The typical consequences for DUI can include:

  • Informal probation.
  • Max 6 month jail sentence for first offense/ Max 1 year for repeat offenders.
  • Base fines of $390 to $1,000.
  • Suspended or revoked driver’s license.
  • DUI school.
  • Community service.
  • Requirement to attend AA meetings.
  • Vehicle being impounded.
  • Instillation of breathalyzer ignition device on vehicle.
  • Victim restitution’s if someone was hurt.

Generally, DUI’s are misdemeanor offenses, unless:

  • Someone was seriously hurt.
  • Someone was killed.
  • This is the driver’s fourth DUI in a 10 year period.
  • This is the driver’s third DUI that harmed someone in a 10 year period.
  • The driver has a prior felony DUI in a 10 year period.

Felony DUI convictions can come with the already mentioned penalties, as well as these increased penalties:

  • Formal probation.
  • Prison sentences, which vary from case to case.
  • Base fines between $390 and $5,000.

DUI for Professional Drivers

The fact that DUI laws apply to all drivers is a given. However, what some people may not know is that this law applies differently to drivers who are for-hire. A for-hire driver being someone who drives a vehicle such as a taxi, bus, Lyft, or Uber.

Normally, drivers are only considered intoxicated if they have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08%. However, for-hire drivers are only allowed to have a BAC of 0.04%. If a for-hire driver is caught driving with that level of BAC or hire, they will face DUI charges, which would likely mean a suspension of their driver’s license.

The Dangers of Hungover Driving

Something else that many drivers are not aware of is the fact that driving while hungover can be just as bad as driving while drunk. This fact was discovered by researchers at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Participants of the study had 10 drinks, slept off the alcohol until their BAC was 0%.

The results showed that the drivers were roughly as impaired, if not more so, than a driver with a BAC of 0.05%. The drivers were more prone to speeding, struggled to drive straight, and just generally made more errors.

This is likely due to the results of being dehydrated, having low blood sugar, and not getting enough sleep the night before.

There Is No Reason to Drive Drunk

Driving while intoxicated is never a good idea. Not only is it against the law, it is incredibly dangerous. Drunk driving is the cause of thousands of accidents and deaths every single year in the US alone.

In today’s modern age, there is no reason for any of this. With smartphones, people now have the ability get a safe ride literally in the palm of their hand. A person can easily contact a loved one to come pick them up, or hire a driver of a taxi, Lyft, or Uber. Doing this has never been easier than it is right now. A person can easily save themselves and the lives of people they’ve never met by simply pulling out their phone before ever setting foot in a vehicle.

Can Your Neighbor Park and Block Your Driveway?

The downside to living in a city or residential area is that it’s not uncommon for someone to park in such a way that it blocks your driveway. Luckily, in most cases the driver is only there for a few minutes before they move on, but every once in a while you’ll encounter some rude driver who doesn’t seem to see why you are upset about the fact that they’ve been blocking their driveway for hours.

The good news is that you do have some legal options.

The first thing you should do is ask the person to move their vehicle. No matter how irritated you are over the situation, while dealing with the driver, stay calm, cool, and collected. Remember that you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Stay polite and calmly explain that they’re making it impossible for you to get in an out of your home, which is making it difficult for you to pick up kids from school, get to work, etc.

If you’ve spoken to the driver and they continue to block your drive with their car, it’s time to contact the local authorities. Ask that they speak to the driver. If you’ve kept a record (complete with pictures) of the number of times the driver has blocked your driveway, they’ll have a better understanding of why you’re frustrated.

Based on what happens when they speak to the driver, the police will advise you on what your best options are. You want to follow their guidelines and not take matters into your own hands. Don’t be surprised if they suggest having the city tow the vehicle. They may even suggest that the next time you have a problem, contacting them and they’ll arrange for the city garage to tow the car.

While there are things that can be done about a car that’s constantly parked in your driveway, as long as the access isn’t blocked, there’s little you can do about a neighbor that constantly parks in front of your house provided they park on the street and not on your actual property.

If a vehicle has been parked in front of your home for more than a week without being driven, you can contact the police and report an abandoned vehicle. If they’re unable to track down the driver, they’ll have the vehicle to the city impound.
